About the artist
" I combine the digital and the tangible, so I combine two worlds. "
Karin Vermeer is an independent artist who has lived and worked in Rotterdam since 2002. Her work is created by digitally combining and manipulating photographs and paintings into new, original artworks. Vermeer specializes in portraits created by overlaying and mixing four to five different faces of different ethnicities to create a new, non-existent person. The digital images are printed and inked to create the final result. An attempt to make a digital image tangible again.

Karin Vermeer was born in Tilburg in 1970, where she attended fashion school until she was accepted at the Willem the Kooning Academie in Rotterdam in 1990, graduating in illustration in 1994. After working as a freelance illustrator and decorator for a few years, it was time to pursue painting and murals as an independent artist. Fashion and portraits of women had always been her main interest since she was a little girl constantly looking at fashion magazines. She was fascinated by the way these beautiful models were portrayed, but also found it disturbing how unrealistically manipulated these images were. Thus began her interest in combining digital and manual photography.
"I combine two worlds together, the digital and the tangible. Creating for me is a game that is about stimulating the senses."
My works are created by digitally combining and manipulating photographs and paintings to create new, original artworks. My favourite subject is the female face. I specialize in portraits created by overlaying and blending different photos of different people to create unique, non-existent people. I also photograph models in my studio and create a new image that I combine with old walls, grunge posters and other exciting elements. When the digital part is done, I print the image and start painting over it. I create thick textures and many layers of paint and gel over it. In this way, I try to make the digital image tangible again. My work is not about explanations and concepts. For me, it is a game that stimulates the senses. I start with no idea in general, but by looking at images that interest me and mixing them, a new image slowly emerges.
All works are made to any size on request. For most of these works I mix prints, paint, gel medium and a matt/gloss coating. The paintings are handmade, individually slightly different, in editions of max. 25 pieces.
